Thoughts on English This Year

As one of you described so insightfully in your response to the last blog posting, an ideal school is one in which the teachers learn from the students just as much as the other way around. And in reading your thoughts and ideas about how to improve high school, I can honestly say I learned a lot from your comments. Overall, you shared your observations that school bogs students down with petty rules and wasted time, from teachers who do not control their classes to having to take courses that you feel will not benefit you after you leave the walls of Abington Senior High. And overall, I found your comments genuine and thoughtful. I think that the adult population of our school could learn a lot from your comments here, as I have.

In the spirit of expressing ourselves in order to learn more about things we all take for granted, like the daily routine of school life, this blog posting focuses specifically on your experience in this English class - Mr. Rendine's English 2 - through the 2008-2009 school year to date.

What are your thoughts about English 2 this year? What experiences or people in English have stood out as important for you? What feelings have resulted from your experiences in English?

I'm going to leave this open-ended, so you may take your comments about this class in any direction you choose, on the condition that you focus on what has been most important and meaningful to you as a student in English 2.

Thank you in advance for continuing to help me create a learning environment that is worthwhile for all students. Your comments are greatly appreciated.

Be sure you:
  • spell check
  • grammar check
  • write at least 150 words

  1. English has been a lot more interesting to me then my previous English classes. I have to say you made it a little more fun, even though every now and then you have some really cheesy presentations; you put more effort into this year than any of my other teachers. I learned a lot of new things that I now use such as new additions to my vocabulary, I love talking to people using sophisticated words and sounding smart. I’ve also developed a taste for literature, I never really enjoyed literature, I always thought it was to hard to comprehend, but now I like thinking a little harder to figure out what the writer really meant, it gives me a sense of accomplishment. Because of our particular English class, I’ve made a best friend, of course you know, Krista, and a lot of others as well. I’m proud of myself for the accomplishments I did make; I wish I would’ve done a few things differently, but overall I’m happy with English so far this year.

  2. English has never been my favorite subject personally so it has to be very interesting for me to like it. Even though I don’t like English, this year wasn’t so bad. Compared to last year the books are better and we were able to interact more in class. No particular person had really stood out for me because I don’t feel like any of the people we read about or read works of were that important. Maybe Shakespeare, but we have heard so much about him that any information we learned was mostly review. The work done this year made me feel like I really was in high school. Last year we had a lot of busy work meaning it was things to waste time, but not really think. This year we had to analyze and evaluate works and that made me more open to the class. I liked the fact that we were able to work in groups because sometimes when you work with other people you can snowball ideas from what someone else said. The one down side I would have to say for this year was we weren’t able to pick any of the books we read.

  3. My thoughts about English 2 this year are that it is pretty fun. When something is fun in class, I feel like kids learn and pay more attention better. This year we have read a couple of books such as plays. I personally don’t like reading plays because I don’t understand them that good. Than we have a quiz on what we read and I really don’t understand. So I’m going to fail the quiz. Some experiences that stood out for me is acting out the play on stage. It was fun and funny. I like getting involved and not sit there in a chair and read. If we talk about the book as a class or watch the movie than ill understand it much better. My feelings towards my experiences in English are that English this year was overall fun and bad at the same time. But everything we do I’m not going to like so I understand.

How I felt about English 2 this year is very well-informed. I feel we read a bundle of good books, and used what we got from those books and analyzed what they really meant. We had a lot of great projects over the year like, Othello reenactment, vocabulary projects ext. What experiences in English that have stood out to me as important is reading and comparing and contrasting the books we’ve read and what they really meant. Why I think that’s important is because when you take the SAT’s or PSSA’s we don’t have you to help us break it down we have to learn to do that on our own. A person in English that have stood out to me as important would be you. Why I think you have stood out, (not only because you’re the teacher) but because you have to set an example, discipline, and teach us all at that same time that’s something I find very tricky to do. My feelings about my English 2 experience are well-rounded because I feel we did a little bit of everything, and learned a lot. Things we can take on towards our future. That’s why schools here, right? English is just another very vital stepping stone.

  5. I think this year in english was alright. It was only alright because i kind of thought the things we read were boring. The only reason I thought the things were boring is mainly because i hate reading. But we did do some fun things like the Othello play that we did. I had a lot of fun doing that. I also had a lot of fun with all the people in my class, especially with Terik and Bray. Some feelings I have about english now is that it can be really fun if you just do what ever you have to do. So now I am definately looking forward to what english will be like next year, and to also see who will be in my class!

  7. English 2 this year was very easy for me. I kind of just flew by it in this class. Some of the books I didn’t quite understand but I figured them out. I thought the book selection was better then last year with shakesphere. I liked how we watched Othello in class and not really read as much of the book, but we did book questions. We mixed it up. I feel like English is relaxing and calming. It’s a class I can just relax in and not worry about anything. This year with you, Mr. Rendine was awesome. You are very creative in everything we do as a class with the plays for Othello and many group/class projects. Being proactive in class definitely makes it more enjoyable.

  8. I honestly think that this English class is my favorite class for many reasons. I learn a lot of different things, English is my best and favorite system, I enjoy the lessons, and I have many friends in this class. I like the free writes because I can write whatever is on my mind and you can relate to what is going on in our lives a little bit. I also have enjoyed all of the books we have read, and especially The Catcher in the Rye. I like how we spent a long time on the book, which allowed me to fully understand the book. I like how some days we take a break from what we are learning and play categories. That game helps us not only have fun but it also helps us to think about different words. I have done very well in this class, and I think it is because I can enjoy the class, which helps me focus more.

I thought english 2 this year was boring. I didn't learn much except maybe new grammar terms. I have a english notebook with 4 pages of notes in it. I don't remember what happened in the catcher in the rye. Of mice of men was enjoyable but the class took too long to analyze the book. Othello was hard to completely understand because of shakespeares language. Experiences that were important to me in english class was learning how to read with enjoyment. I was forced to read books in english class and that somewhat sparked something in me and now I want to read more books. Honestly nothing in english class has made an impact on my life. The free writes were kind of hard to knowing that the teacher would be reading them. One feeling that grew from english class was the desire to learn more and see what other english classes have to offer because this one was boring and I feel empty when I think of this year in english. There's better english classes out there and I am interested in taking them.

  10. I would have to say that English this year has been an exciting thrill. I thought that English would be the same as every other class dull and forever lasting lectures that we don’t need in some cases. What I have witnessed about our class is that we are an open minded bunch of kids who like to express the way we feel. The people who influenced me were “George” and “Lenny”. From reading about them I learned that you shouldn’t take life for guaranteed, and work doesn’t come easy. I put myself in there shoes , and I wondered what I would have done if I was caught in their situation. Would I kill my best friend or let him keep bringing me problems. That’s a hard choice but I would do what’s right. All around for English this year I would say that English one of my top subjects. I really didn’t like it that much but having Mr. Rendine seemed to make everything come together.

  11. My thoughts about English this year…Hmm seems like a good topic. English this year has been not only fun but a great learning experience. The books we’ve read and the projects we’ve done have bettered me not just as a student but as a person. My favorite project/learning experience would have to be the plays for the scenes of Othello. It was extremely fun. Writing the script, that was completely made up of the most hilarious Ebonics, which Leif and I wrote. We tried to make it as stupid as possible and yea I think we succeeded in doing that. And the actual performance was equally as hilarious, even though I regret not memorizing my lines. Right now I’m greatly enjoying read A Street Car Named Desire, not only is it a great book but the readers we have at the moment, including myself, are great. I also really liked the book The Catcher in the Rye, it was good. I like stories about people finding themselves.

  12. This year I did not learn as much I thought I would in a “college prep” class. I feel that all we did was read books that had no meaning to me. We did do vocab. And parts of speech for a little but it was not enough. You as a teacher were good but we did a lot of pointless repetitive assignments. I feel like as a teacher you were good, Accept for the fact that we didn’t really learn anything. We did do a lot of fun, group activities that helped me work with people better. Other then that I thought it was a good and easy year this year.

In English 2 this year I have learned a great number of things. I have made new friends, read new books, and covered topics I never covered before. From the friendship in Of Mice and Men, to the corruption in Shakespeare’s Othello. Every book we have read has left an impact on me. Not to mention a younger more technical approach to learning. With a not so traditional teacher, one who isn’t afraid of trying new things. Every little detail of English 2 has been a lesson for me this year.

  14. I have learned a lot from English this year. You’re not always going to like the things you like but you have to do them. I know im not always the nicest person to get along with but you hung in their Mr.Rendine. I enjoyed the activities we did. We had a lot of group projects an overall I like it but I feel that I didn’t learn as much as I though I would of learned. Don’t get me wrong I did enjoy you presents…..sometimes.
